Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research
Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research, otherwise known as PRIM&R, is an organization committed to promoting the highest ethical standards in the conduct of research. The PRIM&R mission is advanced by developing educational programs for those charged with the review and conduct of research; in particular personnel involved with human protection and animal care and use programs. Approximately, 2700 professionals of various types are regularly involved in its activities. Since 1974, through bi-annual conferences, educational and mentoring programs and publications, PRIM&R has addressed wide-ranging topics concerning the interface between research ethics, law/regulation, science, and science policy.
In response to member requests for a certification program for IACUC professionals, PRIM&R began the development of the Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) credential in 2006. Standards of excellence have been developed based on a body of knowledge about the ethics and administration of animal care and use programs. The CPIA credential will signal to research institutions, the public, and members of the animal research professions that its holders are highly qualified to discharge their duties pursuant to United States rules and regulations, prevailing ethical codes, and administrative “best practices."
