Institute for Laboratory Animal Research of National Academies of Science
The Institute for Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR), a component of the National Academies of Science, prepares authoritative reports on subjects of importance to the animal care and use community; develops and makes available scientific and technical information on laboratory animals and other biological research resources for the scientific community, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs), the federal government, science educators and students as well as the public.
ILAR is best known for creation and publication of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, but also produces other valuable publications depended on by the scientific community such as the Recognition and Alleviation of Distress in Laboratory Animals (2008), Guidelines for the Humane Transportation of Research Animals (2006) and Science, Medicine and Animals (2004). Currently, ILAR is updating its information of the Recognition and Alleviation of Pain in Laboratory Animals.
